Walk, run, or push a stroller with us at the World Vision Global 6K for Water. Why 6K? It’s the average distance people in the developing world walk for water every day. How far is 6 kilometers in miles? 6 kilometers is approximately 3.7 miles. It’s equivalent to 15 laps around a track. Imagine a small child making this walk every day with up to 40 pounds of water (the equivalent of a large microwave) on their back. Every step you take is one they won’t have to. When you and thousands of others cross the finish line, you’ll be changing the lives of women and children by helping to free them from a life spent collecting dirty water.

Registration is $50, which provides clean water for one person so they can wash their hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19. When you register, World Vision will send you a 6K t-shirt, race bib with a photo of the child you are walking and running for, and you will receive a metal after completing the 6K. No matter where or how you move your feet—in your house, at a park, or through your neighborhood, you’ll change lives by bringing clean water to those who need it most to fight the spread of COVID-19!

Why walk for clean water? More than 800 children under the age of 5 die every day from illness caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene. The average distance many women and children in the developing world walk for water is 6K (3.7 miles)
But we believe the global water and sanitation crisis can be solved within our lifetimes. Your support of the Global 6K for Water will help provide clean water to people in need. By registering for the Global 6K for Water, you are helping build a world where everyone has access to clean water to keep them safe and healthy!
How will my $50 registration fee be used?
$50 provides clean water for one person. Funds raised will be used for programs on hygiene and handwashing behavior change, to drill water wells and build handwashing stations for communities and rural healthcare clinics, train community members to maintain these projects, and more. The more people who register, the more children, families and healthcare workers who get clean water and hygiene. It’s that simple!
I’m not a runner. Can I still participate?
Yes! You can walk or run from wherever you are. This race is for everyone—no running experience is necessary. The distance doesn’t require significant physical fitness, the time commitment is minimal, and the registration fee isn’t too costly. It’s an easy – and meaningful – way to get our feet moving and make a global impact that helps fight the spread of COVID-19!
Where will funds from the Global 6K be used?
In 2021, funds raised from the Global 6K for Water will go to World Vision’s water programs around the world and used for programs on hygiene and handwashing behavior change, to drill water wells and build handwashing stations for communities and rural healthcare clinics, train community members to maintain these projects, and more. By 2022, World Vision’s goal is to reach a total of 2,675,000 people with clean water as we continue on our mission to reach everyone, everywhere we work with clean water by 2030. Our goal is to reach more than 1,200 schools and 400 health clinics with clean water and hygiene this year.

Stats on Clean Water:
- Three billion people are in need of basic water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, including handwashing facilities, which are so critical in preventing the spread of disease.
- More than 800 children under age 5 die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene.
- The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacts women because 7 out of 10 front-line health care workers are women and there is evidence of increased violence to women during epidemics (WHO).
- Women and children are responsible for water collection in more than 80 percent of households in 61 developing countries; often, the walk is dangerous, children miss school, and the water is unhealthy.
- To look back at World Vision’s progress, in the early 1990s, we were reaching an estimated 200,000 people per year and were in just a select number of countries including Ghana, Mali, and Niger. Today, we reach an estimated 4 million people a year, reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds and reaching three more schools every day with clean water. In 2018, World Vision provided access to clean water to 4 million people.
